Facilitating Mutual Recognition through Algorithms and AI – Final Event within the Framework of the FACILEX project

07 November 2024

On 29 November 2024, a final international conference will be held at the University of Bologna, Italy, to present the results of the FACILEX project, co-funded by the Justice Programme of the European Union. APIS Europe participates in the project, together with several European academic institutions and the coordinator University of Bologna.

The conference will feature some of Europe's leading voices in criminal justice cooperation and will be a fruitful opportunity for dialogue on the topics of European justice and artificial intelligence. During the conference, issues related to the implementation of the three main mutual recognition mechanisms in the EU - the European Arrest Warrant, the European Investigation Order and Regulation 2018/1805 - will be discussed successively in three sessions. The fourth and final session is dedicated to the topic of information technologies and AI-based methods that can support the work of legal professionals. In this context, the functionalities of the free online platform FACILEX developed within the project will be presented. The APIS Europe team will also take part in the last panel and demonstrate how the FACILEX platform facilitates legal research and comparative legal analysis in practice.

The event will take place in person in Bologna, but the organizers have also provided an option for online participation, which requires filling in the following registration form. The working language of the conference is English. The detailed programme of the event can be found here.

The FACILEX project builds on the results of the EU-funded CrossJustice project, with the aim to extend the established online platform with new content and functionalities based on the latest digital technologies.

In the framework of the two projects, a multinational team of experts is examining how EU framework on the protection of the procedural rights of the persons accused in crime and on the mutual recognition mechanisms (EAW, EIO and Regulation 2018/1805) are implemented by Member States. The results of the studies have been integrated into the online platform FACILEX, which provides legal practitioners with:

- free access to EU and national legislation and case law concerning EU judicial cooperation in criminal matters;

- a comparative overview of Member States' national legislation in the subject areas and highlighting gaps in the national implementation;

- a customized legal assessment that takes into account the specific facts of the case.
